London, Waterloo Bridge - 40 people arrested

This morning, a mass arrest took place on the Waterloo Bridge, in London, when 55 Just Stop Oil supporters marched across the bridge in a slow march. They were issued a Section 7, and then arrests began shortly afterward. All told, they marched only about 15 minutes, as has been the custom lately in how police are dealing with this current wave of protests. At press time, over 40 were arrested.

Mike Exley, 66, a builder from Stroud, said before starting the march, “As a father of 2 grown up girls and having 2 grown up step-children, I feel extremely worried about their future lives. This government’s willingness to ignore climate scientists & to continue to issue licenses for the extraction of gas, oil & coal, only shows their callous disregard for my children’s survival. The thought that our beautiful home, now quickly being depleted of wildlife, might soon edge towards an unstoppable climate catastrophe, just fills me with sadness & rage. Me marching today will be seen as a criminal act by this government, but these politicians, who’s short term greed & disregard for my children’s life, are the true criminals.”
Just Stop Oil supporters are marching in resistance to the UK government’s plans to license new oil and gas. They are part of the 10 groups in the A22 Network of civil resistance.

“What are our responsibilities at this time? Because of the fossil fuel industry, we are facing horrors of a magnitude never before experienced in our existence. Our government continues to lead us to the edge of no return. We must stand up and defend ourselves. No one else is going to do it. It must be us, if we want to live.
Our methods must be disruptive, and they must be nonviolent. Our actions are evidence-based, credible, and we have a plan. The only thing missing at this point in time is YOU!”
