GANTRY CLIMBERS RECEIVE TWO YEARS IN PRISON
Just a week after 5 Just Stop Oil Supporters received 4-5 yrs each for planning the 4 day Gangtry climbing action, which shut down a London freeway for 4 days, another devastating sentence was handed down to 6 more supporters.
Six Just Stop Oil supporters were sentenced to nearly 2 years each, with only one escaping jail time with a 21 month suspended sentence and 200 hours of community service.
George Simoson, 24, who received a 2 year sentence, said “I climbed a gantry on the M25 almost two years ago because I want to have a future. As a young person, I’ve got my whole life ahead of me. What is that life going to be like? How many people am I going to witness die because of our government’s inaction? I realized the people in charge are willing to kill people for fossil fuel extraction. I couldn’t just stand by and let them do this.”
Paul Bell, 24, who received a 22 month sentence, said, “I have taken action in a desperate attempt to protect those I love and everyone else from the alarming future that is being left for young people like me. In my PhD I spend my time studying the impacts of the climate crisis, surrounded by some of the world’s top climate scientists. Every day I learn more about this crisis and every day my heart breaks, because I understand how vast the gap is between a safe future and the nightmare future we are heading towards."
He continued, "Scientists must sound the alarm, we cannot continue quietly letting the UK Government twist our words and ignore our warnings.” The young scientist continued, “As a climate scientist I am hugely worried about the brutal climate disaster that is coming down the line. As a young person I feel betrayed and angry. The Government is burning our future in a dumpster fire of new oil and gas projects, they must be held to account for this monstrous act of genocide.”
Recently, Phoebe Plummer and Jane Touil also were remanded in jail.
There are now 21 Just Stop Oil supporters serving time in Prison in the UK for climate action.
Young people don't get deluded that world leaders are going to save you. You need to engage in mass civil resistance and take what is yours. It's the only way at this point. And in April this year ... “It is simply mind-boggling,” said Prof Michael Meredith, science leader at the British Antarctic Survey. “In sub-zero temperatures such a massive leap is tolerable but if we had a 40C rise in the UK now that would take temperatures for a spring day to over 50C – and that would be deadly for the population.” A 40C jump above average temperatures has not happened. But it's still very unlikely to happen to us, right? Except it only has to happen once to kill everyone in the UK - 50C plus is death in 6 hours (wet bulb effect). It's true - maybe some people would survive - until it happens again.

Due to anomalous conditions ongoing in the Arctic and Antarctic, the total extent of sea ice globally is a record low for the date and nearly *4 million square kilometers* below the 1981-2010 average... More sea ice graphics at ZackLabe.com
