After 36 hours in the notorious DC jails, 3 Climate Defiance members are let out in the afternoon of July 27th, 2023.
The conditions of these jails are described as terrible. The holding cells for court appearances, ie: the 24 hour holding area before going before a judge, remain in terrible condition. Metal beds, with holes in them which can cut you or your clothing. Cockroaches. Very little food - and loud rambunctious behavior from inmates who at times are having mental health issues or other problems. These are the conditions described by Michael Greenberg, after his 36 hour stay.
Michael Greenberg, “I fully believe that the reason they kept us for 36 hours was not because the DC police wanted to but because people very high in the administration wanted to send a message. But the message (we are sending) is that we will come back bigger, and stronger, harder, and faster and more often, and more intensely until we get the future we deserve. No new fossil future projects. No extraction on federal land.
We are losing the Earth on our watch Nowhere is safe. - Peter Kalmus, Nasa Scientist
In a recent opinion post on The Guardian, Peter Kalmus gave a very instructive overview of our situation with the climate crisis. We are out of time. In his words, “I’m terrified by what’s being done to our planet. I’m also fighting to stop it. You, too, should be afraid while also taking the strongest action you can take. There has never been a summer like this in recorded history: shocking ocean heat, deadly land heat, unprecedented fires and smoke, sea ice melting faster than we’ve ever seen or thought possible. I’ve dreaded this depth of Earth breakdown for almost two decades, and, like many of my colleagues, I’ve been trying to warn you. As hard as I could. Now it’s here.
And mark my words: it’s all still just getting started. So long as we burn fossil fuels, far, far worse is on the way; and I take zero satisfaction in knowing that this will be proven right, too, with a certainty as non-negotiable and merciless as the physics behind fossil-fueled global heating. Instead, I only feel fury at those in power, and bottomless grief for all that I love. We are losing Earth on our watch. The Amazon rainforest may already be past its tipping point. Coral reefs as we know them will be gone from our planet by mid-century, and possibly much earlier given this surge in sea-surface temperatures. These are cosmic losses. And as a father, I grieve for my children.”
The blog post continues, but the point is very clear. This is our last chance to make a mad dash for survival - before, as Peter puts it, “These floods and fires and heatwaves and crop failures will keep pushing harder against the systems of our society – insurance, real estate, infrastructure, food, water, energy, geopolitics, everything – until at some point, inevitably, the systems will break. Nowhere is safe.” To read the full article, check out His article here.

Four civil disobedience activists (including one rebel) blocked the road to the Burning Man festival. It generated hundreds of media stories.Another rebel glued his feet to the floor of Arthur Ashe stadium and stopped a US Open semi-final game for 49 minutes. It generated thousands of media hits worldwide, inserted the topic of climate emergency where it is least seen - the sports pages. Would you like to be a part of this new wave of climate actions, where a small number of brave people can make a big impact? Come learn from these two rebels. It's not hard. It just needs a bit of pluck, a bit of creativity, and a straightforward message.

“What are our responsibilities at this time? Because of the fossil fuel industry, we are facing horrors of a magnitude never before experienced in our existence. Our government continues to lead us to the edge of no return. We must stand up and defend ourselves. No one else is going to do it. It must be us, if we want to live.
Our methods must be disruptive, and they must be nonviolent. Our actions are evidence-based, credible, and we have a plan. The only thing missing at this point in time is YOU!”
