Greta Thunberg Attends Court for her Action with Reclaim the Future

Oct 11th, 2023, Greta Thunberg attended court for her action with "Ta tillbaka framtiden" - Reclaim the Future, where she blocked roads in Malmo Harbour, preventing entrance to the oil port.

Greta chose not to object to the facts of the case, but instead gave her argument for a moral obligation to resist the “greed that drags us over a cliff.” Greta has been arrested approximately 4 times, twice in Germany, where she was not prosecuted, and twice with these actions in her home country, Sweden.

Greta said,  “...I don’t see any reason why we should stop. We know what is at stake… The climate crisis is only going to keep getting worse. So we have no other option but to continue. I wish that wasn't the case. But since we are seeing that this year is going to be the hottest year ever recorded. People are losing their lives and livelihoods. My friends are losing their livelihoods. I cannot just be a bystander in this.”

It’s unclear what action Greta is going to take next. Her org, Fridays For the Future, continues to organize and does a lot for youth all around the world to join the struggle, every Friday outside schools.

Greta was fined at court for her action and is at risk of receiving jail time in the future, though none has been assigned to her yet.

After court, she was interviewed, in Swedish, and asked if she is ready for prison. Her answer, "Yes."
