Rebels in The Netherlands Block Ministry of Finance

Last week, 40 Rebels in The Hague, The Netherlands blocked all the entrances of the Ministry of Finance. They did this as a report came out this week in which the government set out a plan to phase out the fossil fuel subsidies which are between $42.8 to $50 billion every year.
The rebels demand that the Dutch government immediately stops all fossil fuel subsidies. In the report the subsidies would be stopped in 2030 and some as late as 2035, which isn’t sufficient to halt the climate crisis.

Some of the subsidies would also only be stopped if the whole European Union did it, which would possibly cause further delay.  These plans would cause that the plan to phase out the fossil fuel subsidies would be handed over to the next government, which is currently being formed after the general elections in November 2023. Further, the right and far right have made major gains which could halt or delay plans to stop fossil fuel subsidies, something that the Dutch government has promised since 2009.

At the action it was also announced that on the 6th of April the 37th A12 blockade would happen, a highway that is located between the house of representatives and the Ministery of economics and climate,  to demand again that the Dutch government stops all fossil fuel subsidies.
