Looking Back Declare Emergency Shut Down DC Beltway for 90 minutes on July 4th, 2022
On July 4th, 2022, 13 Declare Emergency supporters went out on the Washington DC Beltway, at the Colesville exit in Maryland, and sat down on the highway.
They blocked traffic for 90 minutes - and in the end, were taken off to jail. Two and a half months later, the Colesville 13 pled guilty in a Montgomery County courtroom presided over by a Judge Koch. Judge Koch handed down a 4 day sentence. The Colesville 13 would go in that Friday afternoon, and be released on Monday. It was a surprising verdict, because the prosecution was asking for community service and time served.
Debrah Kushner, DE Supporter, said this, “The world's lack of any significant action to prevent the ravages of the impending climate catastrophe is what has led me to take this action. I chose to not be complicit in the horrible death of this amazing planet. We are far into the 11th hour. It's time for us all to rise. We have everything to lose.”
Here’s Michelle Wehner, 4 Time Arrestee on Jesse Waters Show after the action, “We are asking president Biden to declare a national climate emergency. That is the first step that we need to have happen in order for the doors to open to do everything that is necessary to save humanity right now. We are in such a situation. Your audience is witnessing this firsthand. They are witnessing the storms and the floods and the fires. In my hometown in Eugene, Oregon, two years ago, the smoke from the fires was so intense it capped the scale of the air quality index for a week. Where I'm from in canada, in British Columbia, there were fires that ravaged towns and then following that were massive storms that dumped tremendous amounts of water.”
